Sensory coding of external and internal cues

Sensing environmental cues is critical for life, and is mediated by cell surface receptors. Some receptors are specialized while others are broadly tuned to a diversity of stimuli. Animals also sense a diversity of internal signals from visceral organs, which is critical to maintain body homeostasis. This ability, referred to as interoception, is dependent in large part to the vagus nerve, which communicates signals from internal organs to the brain.
